It was finally on my 5th trip to Iceland that I got to photograph these guys! Puffins!!! While they do resemble penguins, the puffin is actually a seabird. They breed in large colonies on coastal cliffs. While in Iceland we saw 2 separate colonies! One in on the south coast of the mainland and another on the south cliffs of beautiful Westman Islands. I was asked to join and help document an epic hike over the past week, the Laugavegur Trail in Iceland!
Laugavegur is a long-distance trail in southern Iceland. It runs from the Landmannalaugar geothermal springs to the Þórsmörk nature reserve. The wide, dramatic valley of Þórsmörk sits at the foot of Eyjafjallajökull, an active volcano. The trail leads through striking landscapes spanning gorges, glaciers and multicolored rhyolite mountains. Simple huts dot the route at stops like Hrafntinnusker and Emstrur.
The trail is just under 35 miles! We saw things that didn’t even seem like they belonged to planet earth. To travel opens your eyes to the world around you. Any investment in it pays great dividends. TJ photographed our engagement session in October 2022 at the south end of Wrightsville Beach. The experience was incredible from start to finish.
